This chapter examines the education and schools for African Americans established in states along the Ohio River during the post-war years. It suggests that education, in essence, provided a fragile but vital means of individual and collective advancement. Though African American schools by contemporary standards were decidedly inferior in quality, they attracted dedicated teachers who served as role models for their students and as leaders in religious and civic affairs. Despite racial segregation, African Americans were able to get quality education.
