Citizenship and Civil Rights after the Fourteenth Amendment

Citizenship and Civil Rights after the Fourteenth Amendment

(p.155) 7 Citizenship and Civil Rights after the Fourteenth Amendment
On Jordan’s Banks

Darrel E. Bigham

University Press of Kentucky

This chapter examines the impact of the Fourteenth Amendment of the citizenship and civil rights of African Americans who had settled along the Ohio River. This amendment focused on equal protection of the laws and due process. However, the elimination of racial distinctions did not ensure equality of treatment, and even the enactment of positive guarantees did not put an end to discrimination. To address these issues, African American leaders focused their fight on political rights and on education.
