Benjamin Franklin’s Humor

Paul M. Zall

University Press of Kentucky

This chapter examines the career of Benjamin Franklin as a printer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the period from 1729 to 1735. Except for two impoverished years at London, the youthful Franklin flourished in Philadelphia. He planned to publish his own newspaper, but this plan was undercut by his former employer Samuel Keimer. In retaliation Franklin criticized Keimer in the American Weekly Mercury under the pseudonyms Martha Careful and Caelia Shortface. He also used Busy-Body sketches for a personal vendetta against Keimer.
