This chapter examines the tradition of offering funeral biscuits or having funeral feasts in the U.S. It suggests that throughout the world, funeral rites have been a traditional part of behavior associated with responses to the spiritual and sacred nature of death. It explains that like other elements of culture, food serves to affirm identity, strengthen kinship bonds, provide comfortable and familiar emotional support during periods of stress, and gently introduce outsiders to lesser-known culinary worlds.
