This chapter examines local people's interpretation of the meaning of rural transformation in the American South. The pre-war generation of white landless and landowning farmers frequently saw rural transformation as the source of new choices and new opportunities for better lives often found off the farm. African American farmers, on the other hand, considered the agricultural transformation as another example of a process that disadvantaged black farmers.
