Why Hair Is Political
This introductory chapter discusses the history and political connections of the African American beauty culture. The phrase “beauty culture” is commonly used throughout most of the twentieth century and refers to the methods, tools, and business practices of caring and altering women's appearance. Researchers have only recently begun to explore in depth the history of American beauty culture, and this book seeks to examine the African American beauty culture industry.
