This chapter discusses the black women who dominated and were at the center of the African American beauty culture. They were the mediators between commercialized beauty culture's standards and the African American women who were supposed to be buying the products and visiting the salons. These women were also considered as businesswomen who wanted to make money, and who did their best to promote beauty culture. However, selling and promoting beauty culture posed a number of challenges within and outside the African American society. This discussion looks at several beauty standards that were considered important during the time.
