In 2008, March Madness lasted the whole month. The shock of Northern Kentucky University's (NKU) last-second loss to Ferris State the previous year receded deeper and deeper into the past as the following year's women's basketball team won one game after another all the way to the national championship game in Kearney, Nebraska, on March 29. In that game, unranked NKU upset the highly favored University of South Dakota, duplicating the feat of Nancy Winstel's team in upsetting North Dakota State for the national title eight years earlier. Led by senior cocaptains Angela Healy and Nicole Chiodi, the 2007–8 team achieved all that had been hoped for the year before, without being expected to do it. After the stirring victory over Indianapolis, the team faced four games on the road to end the regular season. This chapter describes the events before, during, and after their major tournaments in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament.
