Among his many attributes, Lea was well known for his wit including his acquired knowledge in the Chinese revolutionary movement. He has been revered as a genius by some, vilified as a charlatan by others, and considered a man of mystery by many. Lea's friends may never have heard the full account of what he did in China, but he was evidently more forthright in discussing his romances with some of them. After Lea's death, no one came forward to write a truly definitive and authoritative account of his exploits. His writings earned him international recognition with military men and statesmen, among others. Lea's writings remain his most enduring legacy.
