As Henry Ford said, history may not exactly be nonsense, and as Alex Haley pointed out, it is generally written by winners. It is important to note, though, that films are able to twist this conventional notion of history as they are set in the past in spite of how they exist in the present time. The screen enables the scenes to look real. The 1969 film Alice's Restaurant was drawn from an actual event that occurred in 1965 in which Arlo Guthrie and Richard Robbins were able to help Alice and Ray Brock in cleaning out a deconsecrated church in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Guthrie was refused a position in the military service because of his littering case, and Guthrie was able to adapt a song about “Alice's Restaurant Massacree.”
