Carl Theodor Dreyer and Ordet

Wahl Jan

University Press of Kentucky

Wahl and Dreyer spend the afternoon walking across the dunes of the North Sea. Afterward, the pair eats lunch with Dreyer's set crew. Wahl is seated between Dreyer and Henrik Malberg, the grand old actor from the Royal Theater. Malberg offers Wahl a sardine and relays the story of how the Royal Theater rejected Munk and The Word, which was originally a play. Malberg continues by discussing the character "Johannes" and his central role in the story. After cigars have been shared, Dreyer explains to Wahl the importance of revitalizing a work when its form is altered.
