As the set crew organizes and places the equipment for production in Borgensgaard, Dreyer works through the rain to capture the opening shot of The Word. When Wahl tries to examine the camera closely, he is stopped by Carlsen who informs him that no one is to look through the lens except Herr Dreyer and Bendtsen, the cameraman. The shot is of an open field; in an effort to create a thematically accurate scene, Dreyer moves the lambs grazing in the field further from the house nearby. Throughout the chapter, Wahl describes the long process of capturing shots for the film.
