Carl Theodor Dreyer and Ordet

Wahl Jan

University Press of Kentucky

Though Dreyer immerses himself in this project, The Word is a trial run for his most anticipated and cherished project, the Jesus-film. Because production of The Word has been met with inclement weather, Dreyer fears that it will not be finished before the contract expires. Wahl describes the similarities between the projects, as both works deal with an individual forced into a social group: Johannes in the midst of his family, Jesus with his disciples. Toward the end of the chapter, Dreyer details the significance of the Jesus-film to his career.
