The Contact Group and the UN agree to determine the future status of Kosovo in 2005. The UN appoints former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari to lead the status evaluation. After much negotiation, Ahtisaari recommends independence for Kosovo despite serious Russian objections. Although Russia blocks approval of his recommendation in the UN Security Council, Kosovo declares independence in 2008. Russia then occupies territories in Georgia.
