With the success of Santa Anita, Southern California racing fans demanded more of their new favorite sport. Popular singer-actor Bing Crosby, along with cofounder Pat O’Brien, obliged in 1936 by building Del Mar Racecourse near San Diego. It became the August getaway for Los Angelenos in general and Hollywood stars in particular. Crosby would also thrive as the owner of horses like High Strike, Don Bingo, and especially his Argentine import Ligaroti, who almost beat the great Seabiscuit in a match race at the new track, helping to establish Del Mar as a racecourse of national importance.
