Changing of the Guard

(p.186) (p.187) Chapter 10 Changing of the Guard
The Mississippi Territory and the Southwest Frontier 1795–1817

Robert V. Haynes

University Press of Kentucky

This chapter discusses the second term of Governor Williams, who started his term by dissolving both houses instead of proroguing the lower one. He reasoned that a compliant General Assembly was needed for his second term to be successful, and he secured this by replacing the current body and electing another. The results of this special election completely stunned the governor: the voters picked six of his “most violent and distinguished opponents”. This eventually led to his downfall, and his critics and other residents of Natchez District awaited the fourth and last governor of the territory.
