Von Sternberg remained until Under World was released. As far as Paramount was concerned, a negligible talent fits only for standard studio products. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Story, and Jannings was given the first Oscar for Best Performance of the year in both The Way of All Flesh and The Last Command. He chose to regard this success as an endorsement of his autocratic methods, subjecting all visitors to his sets to absolute silence and a ban on eating. John Ford habitually invited his producer onto the set for the first day of shooting, introduced him to the cast, and then announced that they would not be seeing him again.
