Von Sternberg was an exception among emigrant filmmakers. He exploited the execution to the hilt. Von Sternberg claimed to have contributed to the music of Dishonored the first time he did so. He later wrote a “Violin Composition” for The Scarlet Empress and boasted of not only conducting a symphony orchestra but also correcting the leader on a fine point of theory. Von Sternberg was awarded screen credit in neither case, and since he played no instrument nor had any musical training, one is bound to be skeptical.
