Von Sternberg created a court combining the rustic and the luxurious at Paramount—part dacha and part palace. He trampled over authenticity, originality, and expense. If ideas and even footage from earlier films fit his concept, he plundered them. Even a scene in which Dresser appeared in a male army uniform to vamp Rudolph Valentino was adapted for Dietrich. Dietrich was simply swept along, as much a victim of von Sternberg's invention as was Sophia Frederica of the Russian court. Von Sternberg simply shrugged off the protests, confident—erroneously, as it turned out—of the rightness of his vision and of the film's inevitable success.
