The King Steps Out became the only film that von Sternberg requested be omitted from any retrospective. It opened on May 12, 1936 from the better papers. It was even invited to the Venice Film Festival. But the experience had soured von Sternberg on Hollywood. He learned that, in another sign of deteriorating relations with China, Japanese cruise ships no longer called there. Tourists were relegated to what one passenger called “a dirty little tub of a mail steamer” (von Sternberg added “rat infested”), which left not from Tokyo but from Shimonoseki, on the western tip of Honshu.
