On July 29, 1943, von Sternberg married his 21-year-old secretary/nurse Jeanne Annete Mcbride. The groom cheated his age a little for the press, giving it as 45 instead or nearer 50. The union was sufficiently news worthy to rate a listing in Time magazine, which described him, inaccurately, as the “magniloquent discoverer and first director of Marlene Dietrich.” The couple settled in North Hollywood, at 1919 Outpost Drive. Von Sternberg had abandoned the Neutra house, which was up for sale. He could not get gas for the Rolls, his Japanese servants had been interned, and Royal Canadian Air Force pilots from the nearby air base (constructed despite his vehement protests) flew practice bombing runs on the isolated building.
