Von Sternberg

Von Sternberg was increasingly ill with the heart complaint that would kill him, but he made an exhausting trip to Australia in 1967 as a guest of the Sydney Film Festival. The festival scheduled von Sternberg to spend a day at the government documentary film studio—a risky decision, since its director, Stanley Hawes, had begun his career as office boy to one of von Sternberg's early bêtes noirs, John Grierson. For most Australians, von Sternberg appeared to be a figure from the antediluvian past, outdated and irrelevant, but few of them found his visit mesmerizing. Von Sternberg left Australia as he had arrived—in a flurry of confusion. When Stratton refused, Bradley warned that if he ever showed his face in Los Angeles again, he risked horsewhipping.

Keywords:   documentary film, antediluvian, irrelevant, horsewhipping
