Von Sternberg's opinion of the man who helped him make his first feature that he does not even mention his name in, Fun in a Chinese Laundry, was low. He simply called the man “Kipps”, after his best-known acting role. Von Sternberg and Arthur always claimed that they chose their cast from the bit players who hung around the studio gates—the group characterized in The Last Command as “the bread line of Hollywood.”
