When James Rufus Agee died in the back of a taxicab in 1955, an unfinished semiautobiographical manuscript entitled A Death in the Family, which was about his father, was found on his desk. Agee had given his novel simplicity as he had been known for character-driven screenplays and sharp-edged film criticism. However, since he was not able to finish his novel, there still were several speculations regarding what sort of changes he would have imposed during refining and editing. After it was published in 1957, CBS found the opportunity to create a Playhouse 90 for Fred Coe to produce. Although it won the 1958 Pulitzer Prize, the network shelved it.
