Wahl describes the process of taking red filter "night" shots in bright sunlight. Dreyer explains to Wahl that because The Word is a realistic film, shadows, tones, and lighting all must give characters a rounded and plastic appearance rather than allegorical and romantic. At this point, Dreyer makes a first attempt at the film's first important scene. For this scene, the actor playing Johannes must be as isolated as possible; for this reason, only a few of the crew members are present on the set. The scene is postponed due to rain, however, and the company must wait until the next day to begin filming.
