November 1908: Tennessee and Kentucky
By train, buggy, and horseback, over rough and rocky roads, the Campbells proceeded over the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee, through Pleasant Hill, Grassy Cove, Jewett, Grandview, Pomona, and Ozone, to Knoxville for the opening meeting of President Theodore Roosevelt's Committee on Rural Research. Afterwards, they went through the country of the infamous Kentucky feuds to visit educational institutions.
