Appalachian Travels

Elizabeth McCutchen Williams

University Press of Kentucky

Riding in creek beds, in bitter cold weather, often walking to keep warm, the Campbells spent the month of December traveling in Kentucky, collecting information and discussing the educational and spiritual needs of the populace. Living conditions in the region were often primitive, with little concern for sanitation-therefore much typhoid, tuberculosis, and eye infections. Christmas was spent at Hindman Settlement School, where Olive Campbell was charmed, hearing the “old-timey song-ballets or love-songs” for the first time.
