This chapter uncovers the beginning of Mae Murray’s life, the facts that she spent a lifetime trying to cover up. For the first time, her parent’s names, her birth date and place of birth are documented. The reader learns the identity of her brothers and is introduced to the world into which Murray was born. The chapter examines the fanciful stories Murray invented over the years, her attempt to place her beginnings in a setting of privilege and wealth. The chapter reveals a childhood that was spent in squalor and despair in the Lower East Side of New York City. It shows a childhood that was marred by poverty, mental abuse, and alcohol. The chapter shows the ambition of a little girl determined to dance her way out of her painful beginnings.
