This chapter seeks to position the Black Athletic Revolt within the wider black freedom struggle of the 1960s. It shows how the position of the black athlete changed over time and the reasons why a revolt emerged in the late 1960s. The intersections between the different tactics used during the black freedom struggle and methods of protest used by black athletes are explored. The extent to which the black athletic revolt drew from the traditions of both the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement is highlighted. The chapter lays out the background to the story the book tells and allows the reader to see where this story fits into the wider narrative of the struggle for black equality.
