Gilbert meets, woos and quickly married starlet Virginia Bruce. She co-stars with him in his best talkie, Downstairs, for which he supplied the story. Background on the pre-Code films of 1932, perhaps Hollywood's real Golden Year. His friend Paul Bern marries Jean Harlow that year and commits suicide. Gilbert is bumped from roles in Grand Hotel and Red Dust, as Clark Gable overtakes him at MGM (notes too on Clara Bow's similar fate at Paramount)
