This chapter contains a production history and analysis of Wyler's second film for Goldwyn, Dodsworth. It discusses the various script versions (by a number of different writers), Sidney Howard's play, which was the basis for the film (Howard was credited as the screenwriter as well), and the Sinclair Lewis source novel. The casting of the film is also considered, along with Wyler's difficulties with co-star Ruth Chatterton and a tabloid scandal involving another co-star, Mary Astor.
