Gone with the Plague

Jezebel (1938)

(p.137) 7 Gone with the Plague
William Wyler

Gabriel Miller

University Press of Kentucky

This chapter details the production history of Jezebel, Wyler's first film for Warner Brothers and, most importantly, his first collaboration with Bette Davis — with whom he had an affair, and who won an Oscar for her portrayal of a spoiled southern belle. (This film was the studio's effort to compensate its star for losing out on the role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind by giving her a similar role with an analogous setting.) Also discussed here are the play by Owen Davis, which has never been published, debates within the studio over the nature of Davis's character, and the multiple script versions.
