Pola Negri

Chapter 5 discusses the transitional period between Negri's last contracted movie in Berlin and her voyage to America. The actress spends much of that time in Switzerland, gracing parties and social events that she has little or no desire to attend. From Switzerland she heads to Paris, a city she feels comfortable in, to heal a devastating heartbreak. This chapter describes the multifaceted woman Negri was—a savvy movie star, always trying to make her life a blur of social events, real or fabricated, as well as a generous person, wishing to repay the kindness bestowed upon her by Casimir de Hulewicz. Fueled by expert advice from her friend Sarah Bernhardt, Negri boards a ship to America. The reader is left on a high note as Negri successfully escapes her unhappy marriage and makes a fresh start as the first foreign actress to go to Hollywood.
