Deep in debt, Trumbo spent the last years of his life writing as many scripts as he could. He also started work on a novel about the psychology of Nazism. His most important assignment was the adaptation of Papillon, about a subject close to his heart: injustice. During shooting of the film he learned he had lung cancer. He had surgery followed by a heart attack, and his remaining years were sickly ones. During that period he had a lengthy, vitriolic correspondence with Albert Maltz concerning the motives of the Hollywood Ten, and he challenged Richard Corliss’s denigration of his scripts. Just before he died, the Academy finally gave him his Oscar for The Brave One.
