Trumbo secured a job as a script reader at Warner Bros., which he planned to use as a steppingstone to becoming a screenwriter. He helped organize the Readers and Writers Guild and was blacklisted for a short time. During those years, his first short story was published; he earned his first screen credit; and he wrote his first published novel, Eclipse, a scathing critique of his hometown. He also wrote a political satire of the New Deal, Washington Jitters.
