Trumbo joined the Communist Party in 1943. His main political activities during this time involved campaigning for civil rights for black people and electing liberal politicians to public office. The State Department invited him to attend the United Nations Organizing Conference in San Francisco, where he wrote an important speech for the secretary of state. The US Army also invited him to become a war correspondent, and he toured the Pacific theater of operations for several weeks.
