(p.5) 1 Childhood in Ireland
Rex Ingram

Ruth Barton

University Press of Kentucky

This chapter traces Ingram’s early life from his birth in January 1893 in Rathmines, Dublin, Ireland, through his family’s various moves to the moment he decides to immigrate to America. The main period of his childhood is spent in Kinnitty, in the Irish midlands, and the chapter describes growing up in rural Ireland in some detail. It also covers his education, both at home and at St. Columba’s College, the influence of the Celtic Revival and William Butler Yeats on his youth, and the impact on Ingram of his mother’s death.
