This chapter explores homophobia in Hollywood, with some of Walters’ associates sharing their memories about the treatment of homosexuals in the movie industry in the 1950s. Walters begins pre-production on Royal Wedding for Arthur Freed but asks for a release when Judy Garland is assigned. Instead, he directs his first non-musical, Three Guys Named Mike (1951), a comedy with Jane Wyman. Walters approach to filming comedy is discussed, and his habit for minimal shooting. He directs the musical Texas Carnival (1951) with Red Skelton and swimming star Esther Williams. Censorship and Production Code adherence are discussed.
