Computer-Generated Imagery and the Future of Stunt Work

Computer-Generated Imagery and the Future of Stunt Work

(p.247) 16 Computer-Generated Imagery and the Future of Stunt Work

Mollie Gregory

University Press of Kentucky

This chapter covers revolution and transformation—from physical stunts to digital stunts that “let you do whatever you imagine.” Visual effects and computer-generated imagery (CGI) decrease the need for physical stunt work, and the new techniques can make stunts safer. Also addressed is the question: will there always be stunts? Meanwhile, a few more women are stunt-coordinating and directing second units, but they’re still in the minority. Some of the reasons include their roles as wives and mothers and the age-old quandary that “women don’t hire other women.” However, awards to stunt performers are on the increase: Emmys, SAG Awards, Taurus World Stunt Awards, and Diamond in the Raw Awards.

Keywords:   computer-generated imagery (CGI), visual effects, female stunt coordinators, 2013–2014 statistics on women employed in the industry, stunt awards
