The Société Cinématographique des Auteurs et Gens de Lettres
The Société Cinématographique des Auteurs et Gens de Lettres (SCAGL) was created in early 1908 to produce prestigious literary adaptations for Pathé. Capellani, as its supervisor, was a prime mover. Films were now shown in dedicated theaters rather than fairground shows. Quality and length increased as the the public grew more spohisticated. Capellani directed the first adaptations of Daudet’s L’Arlésienne (1908), Zola’s L’Assommoir (1909), and Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris (1911), using famous theater and music-hall actors.
