Barkley was born in Kentucky’s Jackson Purchase region in humble circumstances as the eldest son of a tenant farmer who raised dark tobacco. He learned the hard life and chores of rural Kentucky but in the process became a sturdy youth who enjoyed the love and support of his parents. They made serious sacrifices that enabled their firstborn to attend school at a time “free” education was not free. Apart from farm life, church and the country store influenced his life. And, without electronic gadgets to fill any free time he had, Barkley had more of an opportunity to become adept with the spoken word.
