Clinton and College
Clinton and College
The Barkley family moved from Lowes to Clinton after declining prices for tobacco forced the father to shift to wheat cultivation. Poverty led Barkley and his father to work tenant farms and join thresher crews. Work on the crews gave Barkley stories he could tell for the rest of his life. Only through a janitorial scholarship could he work his way through five years of college to earn an A.B. degree. A gold medal winner in Marvin’s Periclean Debating Society, Barkley continued to hone his skills as a speaker by membership in the Few Debating Society during one year of study at Emory University. His sophomore status at Emory gives a more realistic understanding of the level of education received at Marvin College.
