This introduction introduces the general topic and highlights its historical importance. It also raises a number of broad questions to be considered in the volume. The most significant issue to be discussed is the effect of foreign policy on candidates and how they frame their campaign narratives. Although conventional wisdom suggests that foreign policy is not as important to voters as domestic factors, this introduction argues that it is still important. One key theme is the issue of credibility—the need for a candidate to be seen as a credible global leader appears in most, if not all, of the chapters.
