This chapter tells of Still leaving Alabama for Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, a college that offered students the opportunity to work for their tuition. He was assigned physical jobs that kept him tired and hungry, making his academic experience difficult. He made friends: Dare Redmond, who would be a life-long friend and Mayme Brown, whose early death made her a mystery in his life. After sophomore year, Still took a break, went home to Alabama and made a trip to Texas.
