This chapter tells of why and how James Still entered the Army in March 1942, several months after the US entered World War II. His training began near San Antonio with the 8th Air Depot Group, which left New York six months later on a ship headed for the Gold Coast of Africa. Still carried a paperback copy of Walden and kept a diary of the crossing on the margins of the pages.
