A new ambition has taken hold of eight-year-old Reatha. After moving with her family to Tacoma and attending a play put on by the Allen Company, she determines to become an actress on the stage, impresses Pearl Allen, head of the Allen Company, with her appearance in an amateurs’ showcase, and joins the Allen Company. Reatha’s two-year career with Allen’s company is detailed. The remainder of the chapter involves Reatha’s move to Spokane and employment by Jessie Shirley’s stock company, as well as her brief residence and appearance as an actress in Seattle. The ways by which Reatha’s persona and ambitions are furthermore shaped by her family’s itinerant lifestyle, her social station, and the public approval and opulence she encounters as an actress are interwoven throughout the chapter.
