Devoted entirely to Barbara’s revelation of her son to the public, this chapter documents the plot that enabled it. Various hindrances encountered by Barbara and her co-conspirators are fully explored, including Barbara’s desire to protect her assets (and Sonny’s future inheritance) by divorcing Ben Deely and her consequent reliance upon the help of her ex-husband Philip Ainsworth. Barbara’s trip to Texas, the place where the scheme is staged, is presented. The involvement of Arthur Sawyer, her business manager, in the scheme, as well as his fears regarding the effect of motherhood upon Barbara’s film career, are also explained. Finally, initial reactions of Barbara’s fans to Barbara as a mother are revealed.
