Dolores is born in Pittsburgh’s Soho, one of America’s most dangerous neighborhoods for an infant. Typhoid runs rampant, and tenement life is horrific. Maurice ison the road at the time of her birth, working his way up from tent shows to stock companies. As soon as financially possible, he moves his growing family to New York, where he is eventually hired by the Spooner Company of Brooklyn. The Spooner sisters have fast become a powerhouse in the male-dominated theatrical world, and as a member of their company Maurice firmly establishes himself as a legitimate stage actor. Mae’s second pregnancy and her growing dissatisfaction with Maurice’s incomeforce him to consider having a go at the movies.
