Helene and Lowell Sherman separate. Their divorce trial becomes one of the most vicious in Hollywood history. Sherman accuses his wife of collecting pornographic books and then retracts the charge, but not before ruining any chance she might have had left of reviving her film career. Maurice walks into a drugstore and collapses with a cerebral hemorrhage, but recovers quickly. Helene weds Arturo “Mussie” Del Barrio in Cuba and settles into married life under the dictatorial gaze of Mussie’s mother, Cora. Jack promises Dolores that if she gives him a son, he’ll stop drinking. His oath doesn’t make it through the afternoon of John Jr.’s birth.
