Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Anne Wetzell Armstrong moved as a young girl to Knoxville, Tennessee, where her father served as a broker for a British mineral and timber company. For the rest of her life, Armstrong claimed East Tennessee as her home. Though she enjoyed a youth of great wealth and privilege, a railway accident in 1889, just as she was leaving for college, seriously injured her father, and the family’s fortunes declined. Armstrong managed to attend Mount Holyoke College for two years, but left school to marry Leonard Waldrop. They divorced in 1894, and Armstrong supported her infant son and her parents by teaching school in Knoxville....
